Puglia Roadtrip_ Küstenstädte und UNESCO-Schätze.png

Imagine winding roads lined with ancient olive trees, whitewashed towns glowing in the sunshine and turquoise waters sparkling along dramatic cliffs. Welcome to Puglia, one of southern Italy’s most beautiful regions and a wonderful destination for a memorable road trip.

Located in the heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia combines stunning coastlines, fascinating history, traditional architecture and delicious regional cuisine. For my road trip, I chose Marina di Ostuni as my base, making it easy to explore charming towns, beautiful beaches and remarkable historic sites.

1. Marina di Ostuni: Your Coastal Base

Marina di Ostuni offers sandy beaches, clear water and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. It is also a convenient starting point for exploring the surrounding region. Alternatively, consider Polignano a Mare or Monopoli for their picturesque old towns and coastal views. Renting a car gives you the freedom to discover Puglia at your own pace.

2. Ostuni: The White City

Known as La Città Bianca, Ostuni enchants visitors with whitewashed houses, narrow alleyways and panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea. Wander through the historic centre and explore the surrounding countryside, famous for its ancient olive trees. A local olive farm tour with an extra virgin olive oil tasting is a wonderful way to discover Puglia’s agricultural traditions.

3. Alberobello: Discover the Trulli

Alberobello is famous for its distinctive trulli—traditional stone houses with conical roofs. This UNESCO World Heritage Site feels like a fairytale village. Explore its historic districts on foot or join a guided tour to learn about the buildings’ fascinating history.

4. Matera: The Extraordinary Sassi

Located in neighbouring Basilicata, Matera is renowned for its ancient cave dwellings carved into limestone. Explore the remarkable Sassi districts, discover historic rock churches and enjoy breathtaking viewpoints. Guided golf cart tours offer a comfortable alternative to walking the steep, uneven streets.

5. Polignano a Mare: Coastal Beauty

Perched on dramatic limestone cliffs, Polignano a Mare is one of Italy’s most photogenic seaside towns. Wander its charming old streets, admire Lama Monachile beach and enjoy spectacular Adriatic views.
